River Bound Race Series 5k and 8k – June 9, 2012 – North Carolina Arboretum – Asheville, NC

When it rains, it pours. Three races to choose from at the North Carolina Arboretum in an eight-day span. On June 2, we have the Run on the Wild Side 9k. The following Saturday – June 9, 2012 – we have this pair of races also at the North Carolina Arboretum. It’s part of the Asheville River Bound Series and the June event features a 5k and 8k. (An October event will feature a 5k and 10k).

From the race organizers:

The River Bound Trail Race Series is a signature trail running series of races featuring some of the most scenic and challenging trails in the entire Southeastern United States.

This series of running races is designed for a large range of runners, including everyone from those who want to try their first 5K trail run to those interested in a challenging 10K trail run. The 2012 series of trail running events consist of two days of racing: a 5k or 8K race on June 9th and a 5k or 10K race on October 6th.

The River Bound Race Series started in Charlotte, NC two years ago and has been voted The Best Trail Run in North Carolina in 2011 by Endurance Magazine. The inaugural year for the race events in Asheville will take place on the 430-acre/10-mile trails of the Arboretum, NC, just off the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway.

Asheville events are independent of the Charlotte Race Series.

The Asheville River Bound Race is a fundraising event to assist youth, teachers and veterans in the Asheville community. 100% of the proceeds will enable individuals to receive full scholarship on Outward Bound Programs. We have three different programs specific for each group:

Youth will receive full scholarship on 21-day wilderness course (program cost $3,500)
Teachers will receive full scholarship for Educators Initiative, 12 month long professional development (program cost $3,800)
Vets are enrolled on a 6-day Veterans course to assist with PTSD and civilian life reintroduction

We are currently working in conduction with the Asheville public schools and the VA hospital to identify the recipients mentioned above. We work mostly with heads of the schools and student counselors. All our fundraising is forward funded, meaning we first raise the money, than select the recipients. At the end of the year all race participants, supporters and sponsors will receive an email informing the results of their joined effort.

Following are maps for the 8k and 5k courses. Note that the 8k is similar to the Run on the Wildside 9k but the return portion includes the Wesley Branch Trail, which is much tougher than running on Bent Creek Road – a wide, gravel forest service road.

Running the First Light Solar Run for the Sun 8k – Carrier Park – Asheville, NC – May 8, 2010

Bookmark and Share

The weather was breezy and a little cool when I lined up with all the other runners (looked like a little less than 100) for the 1st annual First Light Solar 8k at Carrier Park. It was a great course following the path along the river and through the French Broad River Park (the same park that is featured in the Hot Chocolate 10k). After coming back out of the French Broad River Park we return to Carrier Park and run the entire length, through the RV Park and out on the newer trail section that runs toward Hominy Park. It’s obviously a fast course and I really enjoyed being able to see the leaders two times during the course of the race because of its out and back nature.

The race organizers did a great job. Results were tabulated quickly and the awards ceremony was handled swiftly and efficiently (I received a Doc Chey’s gift certificate for finishing second in my AG – about an hour or so behind Michael Anderson). Post race refreshments were fabulous (among many other choices – homemade brownies!). Put this on your list for next year. It’s a great race, well run and a fun course. Congratulations to Jeff Trantham as first overall and Marybeth Selzler as first female. Congratulations to Teddy Park as second overall and Erik Ostergaard as third overall.

SAVE $10 WHEN YOU REGISTER FOR THIS RACE. Enter “solar” as the coupon code when you check out. Click the “redeem” button after inputting the coupon code and $10 will be deducted from your registration fee and you’ll see the lower price on your screen. The normal fee is $25, the $10 coupon makes it $15 (plus a $2.60 service charge for the online registration). $17.60 for an 8k – not bad. I just signed up and it worked flawlessly.

It’s always nice to have an 8k in the mix now and again. I’m sure an 8k course at Carrier Park will have some loops or travel outside the park. But it’s probably pretty safe to assume it’s going to be on the flat side. The proceeds of the First Light Solar 8k will benefit the WNC Green Building Council.

The race starts at 8:00 AM on Saturday, May 8, 2010. Registration is online at RunReg.com.

Run on the Wildside - Arboretum 8k

RESULTS OF THE 2010 RUN ON THE WILD SIDE 8K

I am totally delighted to see a race at the Arboretum again – Saturday, June 5th, 2010 at 8:00 AM. Ever since the last running of the Bent Creek Classic at the Arboretum in 2006 I have longed for a race in this wonderful setting. This is an 8k race and they’re keeping it within the boundaries of the Arboretum and not venturing out through the gates into the Bent Creek area. I have run this course dozens of times and it is awesome (and challenging). Forget about comparing this to other 8k races that are done on roads (Apple Festival, Thomas Wolfe). This course will add a few minutes to those times.

Download (PDF) the Run on the Wild Side 8k Course Map.

Here is some background on the race from its organizers …

Run on the Wildside is an 8K- (five mile) trail race that follows the roads and manicured trails at the NC Arboretum. The event is part of the Wellness campaign for State employees employed by the Department of Crime Control and Public Safety-(State Highway Patrol; NC National Guard and NC Alcohol Law Enforcement). The race will take place on Saturday, June 5th 2010 at 8:00AM and is open for all public to participate in. The race is also to benefit Mothers Against Drunk Drivers-(MADD) with proceeds to benefit the organization. Ingles Markets and Biltmore Baptist Church are helping to sponsor the event. The National Guard will have several displays featuring slides and play for children during the race. There will also be a “MADD Dash” kids sprint race that day.

The Arboretum will be closed to traffic at race time, so special parking instructions have been provided …

The Arboretum will be closed to all traffic on the morning of the event. All participants are asked to park at Biltmore Baptist church. you will then take a free shuttle to the start line on the arboretum grounds. Packet Pickup both the night before and the morning of will be located at Biltmore Baptist Church.

Registration is at Setup Events

Racers – this is a busy weekend. We have the Chamber Challenge the day before and we have the Human Race and the Downhill Half Marathon at Ridgecrest the same day. If you can, please support this race for an important cause at a fabulous location. I think we should work hard to keep at least one race per year at the Arboretum!

Thomas Wolfe 8k – Comparing 2009 and 2008 – Race Results

Bookmark and Share

I did an automated comparison of finish times for runners who completed the Thomas Wolfe 8k in 2008 and 2009.  This is similar to a comparison I did for the Citizen-Times Half Marathon and found it interesting.  Please keep in mind that there may be some mistakes here.  If the person’s name is not exactly the same both years that person would not be included.  According to this comparison 45 of the runners who completed the race this year (2009) also completed the race in 2008.  I ran a whopping 4 seconds faster this year than last.  At this rate of improvement it will take me about 30 years to run the pace I ran in 2006.

The comparison includes times for each year and the difference based upon which year was faster (2009 or 2008).

Thomas Wolfe 8k – September 26, 2009 – Asheville, NC

A little trivia.  The banner picture at the top of this blog is from the start of the 2006 Thomas Wolfe 8k.

The 33rd running of a classic 8k, winding through downtown Asheville, into the Montford neighborhood and through Riverside Cemetery.  The race starts on Broadway in front of the Mellow Mushroom and finishes at the Thomas Wolfe Visitor Center on Market Street.  Always a nice turnout — just short of 300 runners each of the last two years.  I first ran this in 2006 when there were only 176 runners and I managed to finish third in my age group.  I’m looking forward to this.
