  1. Hello Dennis,

You have a great blog which Eve and I both enjoy. Thank you for making the local running news so readily available.

If you would, please introduce yourself at one of the next races and we will try to do the same.

    All the best,
    Bart and Eve Smith

    • Thanks so much Bart. I will certainly introduce myself next time I see you at a race. Congratulations on the Charlotte Turkey Trot. A friend of mine from Charlotte reported to me that he saw a runner from Asheville and I looked at the results to see that you and Eve and Aaron Saft were there.

  2. Hello Dennis,

Your blog continues to amaze us. Great job!

We are signed up for the Biltmore Park 5k on 3/27. If you are there please say ‘hello’.

We ran the Reedy River 10k a little over a week ago and we really enjoyed the event. There are some FAST runners in the Greenville area! There were a few runners from the Asheville area; Aaron Saft placed 8th overall but he was dealing with an upset stomach and was not able to push the pace as hard as he would have liked too. I finished 4 seconds on the wrong side of 40 minutes but I had a enjoyable run and it placed me 1st in my AG and 4th in Gr-Mst. Eve placed 5th in her AG which we were pleased with since her running been spotty at best due to the weather and work. We bumped into Michelle Ziegler who ran a very solid race. She is now living full time SC. Beautiful course and the weather was perfect.

    • Thanks very much. I’ve noticed there are some great runners and some good looking races in the Greenville area. I recall that you and Eve and Aaron Saft all ran the downtown 5k in Greenville back in January. I think I’ll do one or two of those Greenville races sometime this year.

I’ve been looking for you at the races I’ve been at this year and will continue to. On the 27th I’m doing the DuPont 12, it’s been a regular for me the past three years and this will the the 4th. It looks like that Biltmore Park race should be fun. I live in South Asheville and run that neighborhood after workouts at the YMCA from time to time.

I’m not sure what I’m going to run the weekend of April 4th – there’s a lot to choose from. The 10th I’m doing the DuPont Half Marathon. I’ll be out there plenty this spring so I hope to have a chance to say hello to you and Eve soon!

  3. Hi Dennis,
I ran in the 2010 USATF 10K Masters Championship in Ann Arbor on June 6. It was part of the larger Dexter-Ann Arbor 10K. The 60 masters competitors got to start first, while some 2,000 runners waited behind us for two minutes before they took off. Now that’s the way to treat older runners!
I ran 47:33 in perfect running weather on a rolling course to finish 2nd in the M70 age group. I was almost two minutes behind 71-year-old Thom Waddle of Minneapolis, who has won several national championships at various distances. We were the only two entries in the 70-74 competition. I wasn’t too thrilled by my time (excuse to follow, skip his portion if you wish) but I did have a sore hamstring, and when I saw I couldn’t catch Thom, I didn’t put the hammer down and risk injury.
Thanks for the keeping everyone up to date on this terrific Web site. You do a great job!

    Best,
    Jim Grodnik
    Brevard

    • Sounds like a good time. Better to save the hamstrings for another day. Thanks for the report and for the nice words about the blog. I’ll see you at a race soon.

  4. Hi Dennis, I just found your site – it is great! I live in Tryon, NC down in Polk County and a friend and I are starting our own running club. We have a running clinic coming up that is going to kick off the training for our local race, The Ache Around the Lake October 2, 2010. The proceeds for the clinic and the race go to the St. Lukes Hospital Foundation. Would you be able to feature us on your blog? We are just getting started and need all the help we can get! The details for the clinic are on our website – http://tryonrunners.blogspot.com/

The Ache as it’s own website:
    http://www.achearoundthelake.org/

    Thanks! Laura

    • Sure – I’ll write something in the next day or so and I’ll keep an eye the running club blog. I’ve heard of the Ache Around the Lake, checked out the site and it looks like fun. I might be there in October. I was in Columbus for the Firecracker 5k a fews ago and enjoyed it.

      Best regards,

      Dennis

  5. Wondering if you have heard if there will be a Cliff’s Zest Quest race this Fall? I don’t see anything on the web:(

  6. I just wanted to pass along that registration opened on September 1st for both the Mount Mitchell Challenge and the Black Mountain Marathon…The Challenge filled in about 90 seconds. The Marathon filled by the end of the day…BUT, I have opened up an additional 50 slots in the marathon…Please feel free to pass that along in your blog if you would like…I expect they will fill by the end of the weekend.

There is already a 50 person wait list for the Challenge…It is unlikely that this entire list will make it into the race, so I am not adding to it at this time…

    Cheers,

  10. Hi Guys,
Bob Browning here. The TC Roberson National Honor Society is pleased to announce that it will be hosting the 3rd annual Wes Farnam 5K Fun Run/Walk for Cystic Fibrosis. We will be holding this run on the TCR HS campus on Friday May 27 at 6:00 PM. Cost will be $10 and all proceeds go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

We are hoping you could add it to the “Race Docket.”

This event is family freindly, provides a very safe course, and is meant to honor one of our own, Wes Farnam, who continues to live with Cystic Fibrosis every day. Wes was a Cross Country athlete at TC and has been an inspiration for many students and teachers for his positive attitude & cheerful spirit.

We want to emphasize that this run is for all ages and abilities and that strollers, walkers, etc are all welcome.

Thanks again. We will try to have a link on the TC Roberson Home page to our race flyer up soon. If there are additional questions have people e-mail race organizer Carol Beth McBride at carolbeth.mcbride@bcsmail.org, or myself at robert.browning@bcsemail.org.

  17. Hi Dennis,
I seem to remember a post where you inserted the (amazing) elevation profile from the Dupont State Park Half Marathon but I can’t find it now. Am I dreaming or did you have the elevation from your 2010 race? It seems like it was a crazy amount of elevation gain. Thanks!

  18. HI Dennis – thanks for posting the Asheville Tri – that is going on my calendar!
Can you please add Ache Around the Lake 8K to the docket again this year for us? It will be in Tryon, NC at Lake Lanier on 9/22.

Thanks again for all that you do!
    Laura

    • Thanks for reminding about the “ache” – I just added it to the docket and will blurb about it when I get to September (I’m still in June). There are more and more races every year!
