Apple Festival 8k – September 1, 2012 – Hendersonville, NC

When this race rolls around each year I stop and think, “why wouldn’t you run this one?” In my humble opinion it’s just one of the nicest events around.  The course is scenic and offers plenty of variety and a fair amount of shade.  The race is also part of the 2012 Asheville Track Club Grand Prix Series.  Here’s some information from the race organizers:

The Henderson County Chamber of Commerce presents the Pardee Apple Festival 8k Road Race on Saturday, September 1st. This certified course winds through scenic Hendersonville and Laurel Park, starting and ending at the Pardee Medical Office Building, on the hospital’s main campus in Hendersonville. The race begins promptly at 8 am. The Chick-Fil-A Mini Moo Mile is a one-mile fun run/walk for the young or young at heart and will start a few minutes after the 8k race begins.

Online registration for both events is now open. The entry fee for the 8K race is $30, if registered on or before August 30th, or $35 on the day of the race. The first 250 to register will receive a free t-shirt. The entry fee for the 1-mile event is $10. Race-day registration for both events starts at 6:30 am. All fun run participants receive a finish award and awards for the 8K race will be given to the overall male and female, masters, and top three finishers in the standard age groups.

“We are using this certified 8K course for the eighth consecutive year and the runners always give a great response to it,” said Ellen Seagle, co-chair of this year’s event. “This race has become part of the Apple Festival tradition for many and we have runners from all over the South who come each year to participate. Fontana Dam Run 5k + 10k Race – August 25, 2012 – Fontana Village Resort, NC

A nice scenic race in the shadow of the Fontana Dam near Fontana Village Resort and a great opportunity to spend a little extra time checking out what the area has to offer. I had the opportunity to walk across Fontana Dam about 17 years ago while doing a short stretch of the Appalachian Trail. A little bit of information about Fontana Dam:

Fontana Dam is a hydroelectric dam on the Little Tennessee River in Swain and Graham counties, North Carolina. The dam is operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority, which built the dam in the early 1940s to accommodate the skyrocketing electricity demands in the Tennessee Valley at the height of World War II. At 480 feet high, Fontana is the tallest dam in the Eastern United States, and at the time of its construction, it was the fourth tallest dam in the world. The dam impounds the 10,230-acre Fontana Lake, which spreads across a scenic stretch of the Little Tennessee along the southwestern boundary of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Appalachian Trail crosses the top of the dam.

Both races (10k and 5k) start at 9:00 AM. Following is some additional background from the race organizers:

Compete with other racers in 5K and 10K races along the shores of the historic Little Tennessee River below Fontana Dam in the Great Smoky Mountains on a relatively flat course. Races will be bracketed in 5 year divisions for both male and female participants. A “One Mile Fun Run” will be available for all ages.

Enjoy a full weekend of outdoor activities such as white water rafting, zip line canopy tours, hiking, boating, and everything else the Smokies have to offer. Relax in the evening at Fontana Village with dinner and live music.

Lake Lure Dam Run 10k – August 24, 2012 – Lake Lure, NC

Lake Lure Dam Run 10k

A 7:00 PM Friday evening race, this is part of the Lake Lure Olympiad.  Here’s a bit more about the race from the organizers:

This challenging 10k course begins at the Ingles Supermarket on Rt 9, heads east on Rt 64 and onto Buffalo Shoals Road, crosses the dam, winds up and down along the shore road to finish on the Beach at Rumbling Bald Resort before a crowd of cheering spectators. This is a spectacular evening run in one of most beautiful areas of North Carolina.

Keeping with the Olympiad spirt, Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals will be awarded to Top 3 finishers in each age group. Every participant will receive 2010 Commemorative Olympiad T-Shirt, a iced neck towel to cool you off at the Finish Line, and post race food and drinks.

It’s $25 to register before July 24, 2012 and $35 before August 24, 2012 (race day). Online registration is available at Setup Events.  Note that online registration closes on August 21, 2012 and race day registration MAY be available.

Triple Crown Half Marathon – August 25, 2012 – Appalachian State University – Boone, NC

This sounds pretty cool – a half marathon that goes from Boone to Blowing Rock. The race starts at 7:30 AM. Cost is $40 until August 7th, then it goes up to $50 until race day. Here’s a course description:

The Half Marathon will begin in ASU’s Kidd Brewer Stadium. Out of the stadium, the course will follow a flat River’s St. onto Blowing Rock Road (mile 1 @ Blockbuster). Taking a right onto Winkler’s Creek Rd., the route begins it’s curves and gradual uphill following along the picturesque Winkler’s Creek. The route will then take a right onto Russ Cornett Road (mile 3) with more curves and gradual uphills and downhills all the way to a left onto Diamond Ranch Road (mile 6 @ mailbox #3030). After another left onto Poplar Grove Road the course winds around and takes a left onto Shulls Mill Road (mile 8- just past Crestwood) and then a left on Highway 221 (mile 10) into Blowing Rock. Taking a right onto Clark St (mile 12- #621 Clark St.). the course cruises through the quaint village of BR by winding onto Edgewood, Wonderland Trail, Laurel Lane and finishing downhill into the Blowing Rock Equestrian Preserve.

I wasn’t running today but I was on my way to the Arboretum for a walk with my young German Shepherd Gidget and thought I’d stop by Biltmore Baptist Church to check out the Chick-Fil-A 5k.  It looked like a very well-organized race.

Comments from one of the participants:

Race observations: Plenty of parking. I like being within 100 meters of the start. Race timing was accurate. New age chips fastened to back of race number. Course very well marked and monitored. Challenging at one mile, however. Results ready almost immediately, and available on one of four or five laptops. This is the first time I have encountered this. Just go up to a laptop and enter your race number, out come your personal stats. Great ! Event ambiance was excellent.

Race to the Rock 5k – August 26, 2012 – Chimney Rock State Park – Chimney Rock, NC

Chimney Rock Race to the Rock 5k

Briefly enjoy the short flat stretch in the town of Chimney Rock before you reach the “OMG it’s all up hill” phase.  I’ve done this race twice and while it is, in fact, principally uphill, it’s not terrible.  And you’re rewarded with a terrific view at the top (to be clear – the “top” here is the parking area not the rock itself). Both times I ran this race there was a kiddie pool full of ice water and hand towels – the perfect way to cool your hot head off after the mighty ascent (it gets warm fast – even with a 7:45 AM start).  Registration is $25 by July 25, 2012 and $35 by August 26, 2012.

The Lake Lure Olympiad is an annual, charitable, sports festival featuring numerous events and activities for all ages & abilities in beautiful Lake Lure, North Carolina. The Race to the Rock at Chimney Rock is one part of a series of endurance events that take place throughout the weekend. This event is unique in that athletes choose to do either the 5k Run OR the 25 Mile Bike with the final 3 miles up Chimney Rock Mountain in beautiful Chimney Rock State Park. If you are interested in signing up for the bike event please click HERE. This is the only time you will be able to run or ride up to Chimney Rock!!!

The 5K Run will begin just outside the park entrance and will be a mass start beginning at 7:45 AM.

Edouard Michelin Memorial 5K – August 18, 2012 – Michelin Conference Center – Greenville SC

A nice early morning (7:30 AM) 5k at the Michelin Conference Center in Greenville for just $8 – that’s right – 8 bucks! A description from the race organizers:

This is a 5K out and back course through the rolling hills behind the Michelin facilities on Donaldson Center campus. We will start at Michelin Conference Center, 515 Michelin Road, go right on Lost Swamp Road, right on Griffin Road, have a turn around point on Griffin Road, and then back to the Conference Center.
