Asheville Shamrock 5k and 10k – March 17, 2012 – Asheville, NC

Once every six years when the stars are in perfect alignment and Western North Carolina enjoys spring-like weather in January and Leprechaun’s are seen dancing in Pack Square (hey, come on, it’s Asheville) the annual Shamrock Race ACTUALLY occurs on St. Patrick’s Day. That’s right, this year we’ll be running the race right on St. Patty’s day. Beware, people of Irish Descent will run faster on St. Patrick’s day so I don’t care how tough this course is, my name is Duffy so follow me (at least for the first 10 or 15 yards, then feel free to pass).

The 10k is part of the Asheville Track Club 2012 Grand Prix and I dare say it’s the toughest road 10k in the area. The first two miles are mostly a breeze but once you hit Cherokee you’re in for a grueling uphill pull followed by a couple of miles of gradual uphill on Sunset until you hit North Griffing and start flying downhill. The 5k doesn’t include a big climb and is a nice North Asheville running tour.

There are prizes for the “most origional Irish-themed runners.” I was lucky enough to win first prize a couple of years ago but it is incredibly difficult running those hills with a big green felt hat and fuzzy fake beard on. I might just go dressed up like a runner this year.

Online registration is available at IMAthlete. Click here for paper entry form. For more information, visit the race website.

I always follow you. What’s new?

  2. Hey, I think a Fitzpatrick should join you in this race!

Oh, c’mon. Where’s the diversity? Y’all need some Scots and some people from Wales.
