Black Jack 5k – February 5, 2011 – Fletcher Park

Runners: 66 of us came out for a crisp, delightful Black Jack 5k this past Saturday morning at Fletcher Park. Don’t be sad you missed it; there’s a another one in just five days. That’s right, another Black Jack 5k on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Fletcher Park.

The entry fee is just $5 which goes into the ‘pot’. You get a playing card when you start and you can take a ‘hit’ at the halfway point and again at the finish. Those who score 21 split the pot (in the form of Foot Rx gift certificates). This past Saturday, 12 runners each received a $27 gift certificate as winners. Three more won $20 gift certificates for finding the hidden jokers along the way (one joker was never found and although it’s whereabouts are still unknown, race authorities are speaking to several ‘runners of interest’ in the missing joker matter). Registration starts at 8:00 AM and the race starts at 8:30. The course is all grass, mulch and ash trail. Not a lick of pavement.

Ever Wonder About Race Course Certification?

A Little Bit About USATF Race Course Certification

At the 2010 Bele Chere 5k I made the final turn onto Charlotte Street for the home stretch. I knew from running this version of the race course in previous years that the finish line would be in plain sight just a few hundred yards down the street.

It wasn’t there. I couldn’t see it. We ran all the way back to McCormick Field before encountering the finish line, making the race a few hundred yards longer than previous years. What gives?

Course certification. That’s right, if you’ve been running a race for a few years and then the course gets certified, it will most likely be longer than the course you ran before. That was also the case with the Hot Chocolate 10k we just ran on January 22, 2011.

David Lee of Lee Timing (they certified the Hot Chocolate 10k this year and managed the timing) shared some information and an interesting article about course certification. I heard some of this after exploring course certification following the Bele Chere race too. In plain terms, certification assumes that the runner is cutting every turn as tightly as possible, wasting virtually no steps from start to finish. That’s difficult to do when you’re running with hundreds or thousands of other runners — we’re always adding some steps swinging around people, passing, weaving in and out. It’s probably only physically possible to run exactly the certified distance if you’re all alone or at the head of the pack (or the back of the pack).

A certified course will always err on the side of being a little long. In fact there is a little cushion added to a certified course. So if there’s a race that you’ve run in the past and you learn that it’s being certified for the first time, be prepared. It’s most likely going to be longer.

Valentine Day 5k – February 12, 2011 – Black Mountain, NC

Valentine Day 5k

It doesn’t get much flatter than this. The race starts at 2:00 PM on a Saturday and the course combines paved walking paths, lightly-traveled paved roads and some mulched paths. The race starts and finishes at Black Mountain Recreation Park. I’ve done this race four times and it’s always fun. This is a course that you can practice because it’s so lightly traveled and a large portion of it is on walking paths.

FootRx Blackjack 5k – January 29, 2011 – Fletcher Park

Results of the Hot Chocolate 10k – January 22, 2011 – Asheville, NC

A Cold but Dry Race

It was quite cold (about 24 degrees) when 1,000 of us lined up in the parking lot of Isaac Dickson school for the 2011 Hot Chocolate 10k. The downhill start is always helpful for getting runners moving but we’re reminded that what goes down must come up. The dreaded uphill finish.

I was about 2.5 miles into the race, approaching the bridge that takes us into the French Broad River park when I started to encounter the leaders on their way back. Stuart Moran (last year’s winner) was first but another runner (Justin TeBockhorst) was just a step behind him.

As I made the uphill climb toward the finish I could tell that the finish line has been pushed back from its location the past two years. This year runners had to climb all the way back up to the school parking lot, whereas in the past two years that finish line was about half to two-third of the way up that hill. I confirmed with two other runners with Garmins and the distance appeared to be between 6.28 and 6.30. My time was 51:40, but I think I might have been close to my time last year (50:51) if the finish line were in the same place.

Stuart Moran was the first overall. Keelin Schneider was the first female.

This was (as it has been for each of the past four years) a great race, fabulously organized and supported by a great group of helpful volunteers. Cheers to the race director and the entire team.

Morris Broadband DuPont Forest Half Marathon – Almost Half Full

The second running of the Morris Broadband DuPont Forest Half Marathon is almost half full. Over 160 runners have signed up and the cap for this race is 350. The 12 week training program is designed to help you run your first or best half marathon. A $75 fee includes Race Entry, a 12 week training program with weekly group runs, and a long sleeve NEW BALANCE shirt. The program starts January 15th and ends April 9th. Previewing the Frostbite 10k – January 2, 2011

A Preview Run of the 10k

I ran the course of the new Frostbite 10k yesterday afternoon, along with about 15 or so other runners. Many thanks to race director Duncan Sharrits for leading this and to the Four Seasons Running Club for communicating it through Meetup. The weather was sunny with temperatures in the 40s but it was quite windy which made some sections a bit more challenging. The pace was moderate (53-55 minute total time).

It’s a nice course, that starts just like the Frostbite 5k at Park Ridge Hospital. After two loops around the hospital, the 10k goes west while the 5k goes east. The 10k follows an out and back course, returning to the hospital and rejoining the 5k course for the last couple miles of the course.

I thought about this course in the context of the other three 10k races that are in the first four months of the Asheville Track Club 2011 Grand Prix series, just to consider my opinion of the relative difficulty. I have run each of the other three 10k races at least twice (although nobody has the run the new Shamrock 10k more than once because the new course was introduced in 2010).

1. The Hot Chocolate 10k. This is the easiest of the four, with a downhill start leading to a flat out and back. But there is an uphill finish.
2. The Frostbite 10k. I’d say this is a bit tougher than the Hot Chocolate but easier than the Shamrock and the Greenway. Here’s a link to my results at Running Ahead.
3. The Shamrock 10k. I consider this to be the toughest in the group. The first two miles are relatively flat and some slightly downhill. After that there are a couple of challenging miles and a grueling hill climb. I think of this race as a miniature version of the Sunset Stampede.
4. The Black Mountain Greenway 10k. The second toughest in my book. The rolling hills never let up but if you plan this one right you can recover on the downhills to help offset the uphills.
