Cliffs Zest Quest 5k and 10k Race – October 23, 2010 – Travelers Rest, SC

Cliffs Zest Quest 5k and 10k

I’ve heard good things about this race from a running friend of mine. A nice 5k/10k pair in a beautiful setting.

From the race organizers …

This is the seventh annual running of this charity event. The location for this race is spectacular; it really lets you experience the grounds, ponds, streams, golf course, and home sites that make the Valley a special place. The Start/Finish line is at the beautiful Cliff’s Valley Wellness Center, as well as the runner’s village. The 5k is designed for runners AND walkers, with relatively flat terrain. The 5k course runs out Terry Creek Rd. to a turn-a-round, the return route is around 2 trout ponds, and along a paved path next to the racing Terry Creek, then crossing onto the Cliffs Valley Golf course to run on the cart path. The transition from the golf course back to the community is via a very short but steep ‘grassy knoll’, there is a short run through a couple of streets; then on to the finish line.

This year the race is once again to include a 10k race, for runners only. The 10k follows the exact same route as the 5k for the 1st half. The 10k runners will ‘run right by’ the finish line & onto a new course for the 2nd half. This new course takes in the last 2 miles of the US Cycling Championship’s Time Trial course, only in reverse direction. This 2nd 5k is significantly more hilly & challenging than the 1st 5k. The course stays on the pavement, but takes you by 1 waterfall, by a peaceful arboretum and nature trails, to a 2nd waterfall & the Cliffs Nature center at the turn-a-round. The return route then turns right onto Glen Hollow Road which has several ups & downs before coming out back on Terry Creek Rd, by the tennis center & to the finish line.

A nice Fall 5k in Burnsville. The race starts at 9:00 AM on the town square. I ran this race in 2006 and enjoyed it very much. Temperature was crisp and the fall color was lovely. Registration for the scamper is available online at Active.com.

DuPont Forest Half Marathon – April 9, 2011 – DuPont Forest, NC

DuPont Forest Trail Half Marathon

Save the date – the 2nd running of the Morris Broadband DuPont Forest Half Marathon has been set for April 9, 2011. This is a great trail half marathon, not terribly technical but plenty of rolling hills. Most of the course is double track trails and forest service roads. But an extra treat is about a mile of running on an old black-top airstrip.

The race will be capped at 350 this year. Last year it sold out a few months before the event. Registration is available at Active.com and the cost until December 31, 2010 will be $50. Beginning January 1, 2011 it will be $60 until the race is sold out. This race is part of the Four Seasons Running Club (Hendersonville) Gran Prix series.

Southcliff Black and Blue Classic – October 16, 2010 – Asheville, NC

A Trail Adventure

This is one of my favorite races. I’ve run it the last two years in a row. Why do I like it so much? First, it’s a 10:00 AM start on a Saturday. Second, the setting is great in the Southcliff community. Several outdoor fireplaces burn on the cool October morning. Third, it’s very close to my home. Fourth, it’s an impeccably well-run race with fabulous post-race food. Fifth, a nearly 2,000 elevation gain in the Black race (the long one, listed as 6.5 miles). That’s right – the Black race reaches an elevation just under 4,000 feet and starts around 2,400 feet. So I’ve done a bit of liberal rounding. In any event, it’s more than 1,500 feet.

The race starts on pavement – the quiet streets within Southcliff. No traffic, but this race gets right to the misery – it’s uphill from the start. After a mile or so it’s on to the single-track switchbacks which you’ll stay on going uphill for about two miles. Once you hit the top it is literally all downhill. Switchbacks for a while, then onto a gravel road for a while before tucking back into the woods for more trails to the finish.

The Blue race (the shorter one, listed as 2.6 miles) is described as a mini-version of the Black race. I’m not too familiar with it but it can’t possibly have as much uphill.

Southcliff Asheville welcomes runners from across the region to run on the private roads and trails of this upscale community minutes from downtown Asheville. The name Black & Blue comes from ski trail designations with the black, or black diamond, being the most difficult of the races and the blue, or blue triangle, being the easier. The 2010 event will be a joint production of Glory Hound Events and Lee Timing.

Both races begin and end at the guardhouse at the bottom of the mountain and both races follow the main road for the beginning of the race. Following the finish, each runner is invited back to the clubhouse patio where food, drink and a fire in the fireplace await them.

Here are directions to Southcliff …

From Downtown: Take I-240E. Take the US-74A (Exit 9) toward Blue Ridge Parkway. Merge onto US-74A Travel 4.1 miles and turn left into Southcliff. From I-26: From the west, travel I-26E (which becomes US-19S/US-23) to I-240E and follow directions above from I-240. From the east, travel I-26W to I-40. From there, follow the directions below from I-40. From I-40: Take the US-74A (Exit 53A) toward Blue Ridge Parkway. Merge onto US-74A. Travel 4.1 miles and turn left into Southcliff.

Rock the Quarry Four Mile Race – October 2, 2010 – Swannanoa, NC

Rock the Quarry 4 Mile Trail Challenge

Haven’t you always wanted to run in a quarry? Well here’s your chance. Back by popular demand – the Rock the Quarry Four Mile Trail Challenge. The trail starts at Grove Stone and Sand Quarry and winds upward to the top edge of the quarry, yielding a panoramic view of the Swannanoa River Valley. Proceeds of this race go to Presbyterian Home for Children.

The course sounds more interesting that just a quarry.

The trail begins at the Picnic Shelter at base of the quarry. A flat beginning, the first mile follows gravel haul road, past beaver ponds, and through wooded trail. The wooded section is about ½ mile uphill with a creek crossing. Participants come out onto the haul road for a one mile stretch that is straight uphill to the top edge of the quarry to a panoramic view of the Swannanoa Valley and Black Mountain range. The trail narrows and descends down the forested mountainside. Participants pass by horse pastureland of neighboring Camp Rockmont and finish at the Picnic Shelter.
