Planning to run in the 22nd running of the Sourwood 5K on August 14, 2010 in Black Mountain?

Race organizers are hosting a practice run each Wednesday night – starting July 7th until Wednesday August 11th. The free practices start at 5:30 p.m. and follow the exact course of the Sourwood 5K. Athletes of any pace or experience are welcome to join this free 5K practice run starting at the Cheshire Fitness Club. No registration is required but reservations are requested by calling 669-1092 or e-mailing Sourwood5K@eventmercenaries.com.

Mark your calendar for Saturday August 14, 2010.  Head to the Cheshire Fitness Club in Black Mountain for a great 5k.  I’ve done this three times before and it’s a very nice course and well run race.

2010 marks the 22nd annual running of the Sourwood 5k, a premiere running event that is part of the Sourwood festival. Also returning this year is the Cheshire Pump & Run where participants can earn deductions off their 5k time for doing bench presses pre-race.

That’s right – you can add a dose of bench pressing to your morning punishment because running as fast as you can for 3.1 miles is, well, just not enough.

Folkmoot 5k – July 31, 2010 – Waynesville, North Carolina

Fast, Flat Folkmoot Course is a Great Opportunity for a PR

PART OF THE ASHEVILLE TRACK CLUB GRAND PRIX SERIES

I’ve done this race twice and it’s flat and fast.  I’ve had some of my best 5k times here and set my PR in 2007. The race is Saturday, July 31, 2010 at 8:00 AM.

I mapped the course at USATF and you can access the map for closer review at the following link.  I estimated the start/finish point on the map and it’s probably off a little because my mapping of the course comes out a little short.  But you can get a sense of the course.

The race starts at 8 AM.  Here are directions:

From South: (Sylva/Franklin) Take US 23/74 North to Exit 100 (Hazelwood Ave.) Turn right and follow Hazelwood Ave. through stoplight to Virginia Ave. on right. Use parking lot on corner next to Hazelwood Baptist Church.
-From North/East/West: (Asheville/Knoxville) Take I-40 to Exit 27 to Waynesville. Take US 23/74 South to Exit 100. Turn left on Eagles Nest Rd. Follow Rd. through stoplight to stop sign at Hazelwood Ave. Turn left and follow Hazelwood Ave. through stoplight to Virginia Ave. on right. Peachtree Road Race 10k – AJC Atlanta Journal Constitution – July 4, 2010 – Atlanta, Georgia

Peachtree Road Race Results.

This is an amazing race that will draw about 55,000 participants this year. It’s a good thing it starts relatively early (7:30 AM) because it’s likely to be a bit warm and humid. The course goes through Buckhead, Midtown and finishes in Piedmont Park. I’m sure public transportation is the way to get to this beast of a race because roads will be closed and parking will be tight.

Here’s a map of the course (click for a larger version). Atlanta’s not flat but don’t be scared by the elevation chart. It doesn’t start at zero, so the apparently large fluctuations all range between 800 and 1,000 foot elevation.

Results of the Clemmons Rotary 5k – June 19, 2010 – Clemmons, North Carolina

The Clemmons Rotary 5k features indiviual races as well as corporate five-person teams to inject a little extra competitive spirit and draw some of the casual runners who like the idea of competing with other companies in the local marketplace. The race attracted 179 participants on June 19, 2010 at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons, North Carolina.

Results of the Candlelight 5k Race – June 19, 2010 – Greenville, South Carolina

More than 1,000 runners turned out for the Candlelight 5k Race in Greenville, South Carolina on Saturday June 19, 2010. I’m sure there were plenty of runners who took part in the fun run as well as the race organizers boast more than 2,000 participants. Nothing like a 9:00 PM race to mix up the typical running scene.

Rosman Bookin it 5k – August 14, 2010 – Rosman, NC

Flat, fast and bookin' it.

“This will be one of the flattest mountain runs you have ever taken.”

That’s what the race brochure says. Rosman is a nice little town between Brevard and Lake Toxaway and the 5k put on by Rosman High School is alleged to be a good opportunity for a mountain PR. The race starts at 8:00 AM on Saturday, August 14, 2010.
