We’ve added a new section to the blog for all Race Results. With 305 blog postings and 124 of those specifically about race results it can get a little tricky to find what you’re looking for. We’ve added this new section to make it easy for you to browse historical race results in one place. You can access it by clicking on the “Race Results” link at the top of every page.

As of this morning, the page includes all of the results we have from May races. We will add more historical race results to the section over the next week.

2010 Sunset Stampede 10 Mile Race

Nearly 100 runners lined up at 9:00 AM today for the start of the Sunset Stampede 10 mile race, at Martin Luther King Park. It was sunny and the temperature was already in the mid-60s.

Although the uphill section doesn’t really kick in until about mile two, I decided to take it easy and clocked 8:19 for the first mile. It was nice when we started up Macon because the shade made it quite reasonable and it only became better (from a heat perspective) as we proceeded up Old Toll for the long haul. We ran Old Toll until it ends at Town Mountain Road and up Town Mountain to Crowningway where we reach the high point and head for gravel-covered Patton Mountain Road to begin the return journey.

I reached the five-mile point in 47:41 and my quadriceps were a little sensitive from the uphill run while I ran my fastest mile (number 6), shuffling through chunky gravel in 7:52. It’s a relief to get off the gravel on Sunset which has a few more uphill pulls before finally reaching Baird for a steep downhill stretch and back down into the sunshine on Chestnut, Central, Woodfin, College and the home stretch to the finish line at Martin Luther King Park.

Total time on the back five was 42:59 making my finishing time 90 minutes and 40 seconds. The race distance was a solid 10 miles (10:06 on my Garmin).

Congratulations to overall winner Josey Weaver with a time of 1:00:58. Second place was Seth Hendler-Voss at 1:03:02 and third was Victor McHenry at 1:06:28. First female was Julienne Wright (who was also the first female finisher at the Biltmore 15k) with a time of 1:14:32. Second female was Jessica Walters with a time of 1:15:31 and third was Beth Weathersbee at 1:18:16.

Results of the Paris Mountain 15k Trail Race – May 29, 2010

175 participants completed the Paris Mountain 15k Trail Race this morning. Congratulations to Trent Humphreys as the overall winner (with a course record time). And congratulations to Julie Bledsoe as the first female.

2010 Rhododendron 10k – June 19, 2010 – Bakersville, NC

THIS IS PART OF THE 2010 ASHEVILLE TRACK CLUB GRAND PRIX SERIES

This is the 33rd anniversary of Rhododendron 10k in the quaint little town of Bakersville, NC. It’s a certified out and back course that the race organizers describe as “moderately fast.” I ran the race in 2008 and would have to agree with that assessment. It’s also an inexpensive race at just $12 for preregistration by mail (that includes a shirt!) and $15 on race day.

Memorial Day Weekend Races – 2010 – Asheville, NC – Western North Carolina

2010 Memorial Day Weekend Running Races

There’s plenty to choose from on the racing scene this Memorial Day weekend including traditional road races and grueling trail races. Here’s a summary of what I see in the area.

Friday May, 28th.

The Rock 2 Rock 10k Trail Race was the one I chose last year. It was the toughest race I’ve ever run but it’s a beautiful place and a beautiful course. The downhill part of it is highly technical but if you’re up for a challenge, I highly recommend this.

Saturday May 29th.

The Sunset Stampede 10 Mile race is the one I’m doing this year. I’ve done this three times before (2006, 2007 and 2008). It’s a long steady climb to the top of Sunset Mountain (the halfway point) followed by a nice, often shady downhill run on Patton Mountain Road and Sunset. The drawback on this race is that it starts at 9:00 AM and things can get a little warm at the end of May by 9:00 AM.

The Lighten up for Life 5k race that goes along with the 10 miler is in West Asheville in the afternoon (4:00 PM) starting near the Silver Dollar Cafe.

The trail race on Saturday is the Paris Mountain 15k Trail Race. This sounds like a nice one with lots of single track running in a scenic setting. Trail races can be great choices when the weather warms up because the vegetation provides refreshing cool shade.

There’s also a pair of races held in conjunction with the White Squirrel Festival in Brevard. The White Squirrel 5k/10k starts and finishes at the Brevard Music Center. I ran the 10k in 2008 and it was rolling and featured a tough uphill finish.
