If you’re looking for a mini-adventure and a race outside the immediate Asheville area, I’d suggest taking a look at this little gem in Highlands, NC. It’s May 1, 2010 at 10:00 AM.

Located only two hours from either Atlanta or Asheville, the Town of Highlands is a resort community that has long been an exclusive destination for those visiting the Southern Blue Ridge. The average elevation is 4118 feet, and the cool summers and unparalleled scenic beauty have attracted visitors since it was settled in the 1880’s. Many of the older churches, inns, and summer homes are listed on the National Register, and the quaint downtown business area features fine shops and gourmet restaurants. Quiet, tree-lined neighborhoods extend from Main Street up the slopes of nearby mountains and around the shores of jewel-like lakes.

I must admit I have not spent much time in Highlands. I’ve driven through a few times and stopped for lunch once, but I’m intrigued by the idea of driving out there for this race. The 10:00 AM start time makes it reasonable for runners to travel a bit to get there without having to hit the road at the crack of dawn. A little about the race …

The Highlands Roadrunners Club’s 11th Annual Mountain Lakes 5-K will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2010. Organized by and for runners, the race will use the same exciting course inaugurated several years ago – gently-rolling, mostly on pavement but partly on unpaved roads, winding past venerable moss-covered rock walls, laurel thickets, quiet homes, and two beautiful lakes.

I love the term “gently-rolling” used in this part of the United States, home of the tallest mountains east of the Mississippi River.

Sunday afternoon runs are becoming quite the rage at Fletcher Park. Here’s Run for the Hills at 2:00 PM on May 2, 2010.

Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy is excited to host the Run for the Hills Fun Run at Fletcher Community Park in the Town of Fletcher. This event is designed to raise community awareness about local conservation and the Fletcher Greenway. Outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels can participate in the Fun Run and all proceeds go toward saving the places you love.

This race is described as a fun run (aren’t all runs fun?) and they have used the term “non-competitive” but I think that’s just to encourage everyone to come out whether you’re running or walking. Just like all races the intent is a good time for people to get out and move around. There are awards for the top 3 females and males and for the first place finishers in each age group.

In addition to the 5K Fun Run, CMLC will also host a free family-orientated festival at Fletcher Community Park. Race participants can check-in for the race, and then enjoy the festival with their family before and after the race. The Finish-line Festival will feature various vendors and educational activities. Festival-goers can expect a fun-filled afternoon of fitness, music, and local conservation.

2009 Biltmore 15k Results

2009 Biltmore 5k Results

It’s sad to think that this will be the final running of the Biltmore Estate races (15k and 5k). After 11 years these scenic, tranquil races will fall victim to progress and expansion on the estate grounds. I feel fortunate that I was able to register for the 15k before the races had reached the registration limit.

Both races start and finish near the Winery and the Bistro. The 5k starts at 7:15 AM and the 15k starts at 7:20 AM. The 5k is a simple out and back on the road that runs along the French Broad River and past the “big rock” and turns around near the lagoon. The 15k meanders all over the estate, past Dearpark, the Reception and Ticket Center. The course continues through some parking lots, right past the front door of the house, a pass through the gardens and a culmination featuring a long home stretch along the French Broad River, past the big rock and on to the finish line.

Biltmore 15k and 5k Map

It’s a very good idea to pick up your packet the day before. Here are some instructions from the race organizers …

You MUST pick up your race packet PRIOR to entering Biltmore.

The Double Tree Hotel is the race Headquarters, and is located at 115 Highway 25/Hendersonville Road, just north of Exit 50/50B off of Interstate 40, one block south of the entrance to Biltmore. Packet pickup will be available at the Double Tree Hotel from noon – 8:00 pm on Saturday, May 15th. Packets not picked up by that time will be available on Sunday, May 16th from 5:30 – 6:15 am. at the Double Tree Hotel. Runners will receive a bib with embedded chip, a Biltmore grounds entrance ticket and a wicking t-shirt. You are STRONGLY encouraged to pick up your race packet prior to race morning to avoid delays.

This race has a great theme and a great cause. Here’s a little more detail from the race organizers …

The Junior Woman’s Club of Hendersonville and Earth Fare are “sticking together” with our 1st Annual PB & J 5K and Fun Run to raise awareness about childhood obesity, promote healthy eating and an active lifestyle, and raise funds to benefit the Children’s Clothing Closet. The race will be held at Rugby Middle School on Saturday, May 1st, 2010 at 9 AM.

Rugby Middle School is at 3395 Haywood Road, Hendersonville, NC 28791.

Results of the Run for Paws 5k – Fletcher Park – March 28, 2010 – Fletcher, NC

The weather did not cooperate for this great event to benefit animals. But, plenty of people turned out in the rain and 113 people finished the 5k. A big shout out to Will Harlan for a double header sweep this weekend. He was the first finisher in the Run for the Paws 5k the day after he was the first finisher in the Colon Cancer Awareness 5k.

Thanks very much to Ken Miller (7th overall in this race) for providing race results as well as some course insights he gathered with his Garmin. It’s hard to imagine mapping a 5k at Biltmore Park that isn’t hilly and sure enough it sounds (and looks) like this was a challenging course for the 67 race finishers.

The weather was just right when I lined up with a few hundred others runners this morning to start the DuPont Forest 12k. I love the fast, wide start that was introduced in 2009. I was wondering about trail conditions but was pleasantly surprised with the trail quality and commend those who maintain the trails. I have to give a great big shout out for the wonderful post-race food – especially Doc Chey’s Noodles. That hit the spot after a long trail run.

Amber Moran was the first female overall, defending her title at this race. Tyler Michael was the first overall male. This was a nice follow-up to Tyler’s win at the Shamrock 10k. It’s really great to see an emerging young runner (17) do so well at these highly competitive races.

According to my Garmin the course was a bit longer than last year (7.3 versus 7.1 miles). Here’s a comparison of my results between 2010 and 2009.

DuPont Forest – Morris Broadband – Half Marathon – April 10, 2010

APRIL 7, 2010 – Final Planning for Race Day, Packet Pickup

Packet pickup is at Foot Rx Asheville from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM Friday, April 9th. Race day packet pickup from 7:00 AM until 8:30 PM at race site. Foot Rx website – (www.footrxasheville.com)

Car Pooling. If you’re planning on car pooling with other runners, a good place to meet (if you’re coming from Asheville or other points north/northeast of DuPont State Forest) is the shopping center near the intersection of Rt 280 (Airport Road) and Interstate 26. There’s a Target store there (and a bunch of other retail venues). Here’s a snapshot map – click on it for the interactive Google Map. FINAL COURSE MAP AND TURN BY TURN DIRECTIONS – READ BELOW

The race director has published final turn by turn course directions and a course description and I have created a final course map.  Click on the image below for a much larger image.

Here are the directions …

The course will start at the Hickory Mountain/ Buck Forest intersection at Guion Farm and proceed out
Buck Forest Road. The first water station will be at 2.2 miles (relay turn around point). Runners will merge onto Conservation Road heading toward the Airstrip.

Runners will turn left at Camp Summit Road (3m) follow it past the Ranger station and the lake, climbing up to the old Airstrip road (4m). Runners turn right onto the Airstrip and run the entire section out and back (5m). The course then exits the Airstrip, turns right onto Conservation Rd (6m) and follows that to Fawn Lake Road. Follow Fawn Lake Road up to the Fawn Lake (7m) go completely around the Lake on Fawn Lake Loop for 1 full mile (8m) and begin to descend back onto Conservation Road (9m).

Follow Conservation Road back towards Buck Forest Road (10m). Follow Buck Forest Road (11M) all the way back to the Finish at Old Guion Farm.

The other water stations are out mile 4 near the Airstrip and the entrance to Fawn Lake (mile 7). Rescue Squad and Hendersonville Sports Medicine will be on site.

As of January 26, 2010 the half marathon is sold out (limit of 300 runners in the half marathon).  There may still be some team slots available for the relay.  Runners may email race director Greg Walker at : g.walker@fletchernc.org to inquire and/or be placed on a waiting list for the half marathon.

This is a trail race and it starts at 9 AM at Old Guion Farm off Sky Valley Road in DuPont State Forest (same location as the DuPont State Forest 12k).  The relay begins at 9:30 AM.

RACE INFORMATION

Packet Pickup will be from 10 AM to 6 PM Friday, April 9, 2010 at Foot Rx in Asheville (www.footrxasheville.com).  Also, race day from 7:00 AM to 8:30 AM.  There will be three hydration stations on the course and we’ll pass each one twice, so six opportunities for hydration.

DIRECTIONS

Take I 26 east to Exit 40 (Asheville Airport exit). Turn right off Exit 40 onto NC 280 (also known as Airport Road). Take NC 280 south 16 miles to US 64. Turn left onto US 64 and go 3.7 miles to the stop light at the Texaco station in Penrose.

Turn right onto Crab Creek Rd and go 4.3 miles to DuPont Road. Turn right onto DuPont Rd and go 0.7 miles to a left on Sky Valley Road. Follow Sky Valley Road past the junction of Old CCC Road to the Guion Farm Access Area 1.6 miles on the right.
