Results of 2010 Spring into Action 5k

The second running of the Spring into Action 5k will be held at Biltmore Park (last year it was at Carrier Park). This should be a great place for a 5k that runs through Biltmore Park Town Square and the surrounding community.

The Spring into Action 5K was developed by the Junior League of Asheville as a part of a four day fundraising extravaganza that includes a Spring Market shopping event, a 5K, a Bunny Brunch and the Spring Soiree, a great party!

MISSION: The Junior League of Asheville is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

A non-profit in Asheville for 84 years, our volunteers are working on important issues such as: child abuse prevention, parenting education, ethics development for youth, advocacy for children and education and mentoring for pregnant teenagers and homeless women.

Our message is simple: TAKE A DAY, RUN A 5K AND HELP US BUILD A BETTER COMMUNITY!

Funds raised will go to support all the important aspects of the mission of the Junior League of Asheville, NC. This year our community partners are: Girls on the Run and MANNA FoodBank. The first annual Asheville Gastro Colon Cancer Awareness 5k will be held on Saturday March 27, 2010 at 8:00 AM. Start and finish will be at the Asheville Gastro office at 191 Biltmore Avenue in Asheville.

AGA is pleased to announce our first annual 5K Walk/Run to promote Colon Cancer Awareness on March 27th. Colon Cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death, with 1 in 19 Americans developing the disease during ones lifetime. We are proud to send all proceeds from the event to the Mission Healthcare Foundation which will help fund the Mission Comprehensive Cancer Care Facility to bring state of the art outpatient cancer treatment to Western North Carolina.

Edneyville Spring Fling 5k – North Henderson High School – Hendersonville, NC – March 20, 2010

UPDATE: MARCH 21, 2010 – It looks like Andy Brouwer was the overall winner of this race and Claire O’Leary was the first female finisher. I picked this up from the Citizen-Times photo gallery from the race. I haven’t seen complete results yet.

This 5k race is described as “a low-key 5k trail run to support the Edneyville 5th grade jogging club.” Sounds like a great cause and it’s wonderful to support children at this age in a manner that encourages exercise.

Rugby 5k – Rugby Middle School – Hendersonville, NC – March 20, 2010

The Rugby 5k will be held Saturday, March 20, 2010 at 9:00 AM at the Rugby Middle School cross country course (3345 Haywood Rd, Hendersonville, NC 28791). All proceeds of this race will be donated to Special Olympics of Henderson County, NC.

It was a rough winter for the Black Jack 5k races. I ran one on January 16th (also at Fletcher Park) and it was lots of fun. The race starts at 2:00 PM (registration starts at 1:30). It’s just $5 to register and you play a game of black jack along the way. You get a card before the start, a second at the halfway point and an option to take a “hit” at the finish. Whoever gets 21 (or closest without going over) wins. And the winner (or winners if there are ties) split the pot (in the form of Foot Rx gift certificates).

NOTE: this is a cross country style race and is virtually all run on grass and trails.

Carrier Park has become quite a popular spot for 5k races and the Flow 5k is one more. And for good reason. There’s plenty of parking. Granted, the parking capacity is strained by the annual Turkey Trot but that draws as many as 1,100 runners. For the average 5k with several hundred runners, Carrier Park is perfect and the course is good for beginners, intermediate and elite runners.

FLOW, For Love of Water, is an integrated unit of study that was designed for the eighth grade students at Asheville Middle School that focuses on water. The essential questions that students are asked is what is the water cycle and how does it work?, how are people and water connected?, and who owns water? This race is one part of the community service component of the project as the students are raising money for RiverLink. All aspects of the planning, such as the design of this entry form and the website, have been implemented by students under the coaching of the Asheville Middle School staff.

Morris Broadband DuPont Forest Half Marathon Preview Run – February 27, 2010

There were about 15-20 runners who came out to the Guion Farm parking area in DuPont Forest this morning for a preview run of the half-marathon course.  We ran Buck Forest Road to Conservation Road and onto the old airstrip for a run down to the end and back before returning.  The total run was 8.8 miles.

What we saw today was great and some final details of the course will be defined and announced soon.  Race officials have been hampered in their ability to completely define the course because they have not been able to explore some of the single-track trails and shady wide trails due to snow and ice conditions.  We were not hampered much today by snow and ice because the dirt roads we ran on get some sunshine.

The course is scenic and hilly.  Hill repeat training is a must for this course and the race date is coming up soon – April 10, 2010.  For more on the race and the course follow the link below …

DuPont Forest Half Marathon Preview Run – Saturday, February 27, 2010 – 9:00 AM

THIS IS A PREVIEW RUN AND WILL BE ABOUT EIGHT (8) MILES AT AN EASY PACE (75-90 MINUTES)

I’m looking forward to the Morris Broadband Half Marathon and this is a nice chance to go out and run with a group on the trails that are representative of the course. (NOTE: if you are planning on running the DuPont Forest 12k this is also a good practice run).

There is a preview run for the Morris Broadband Half Marathon on Saturday, September 27, 2010 at 9:00 AM. The run will start and finish at Old Guion Farm (directions/map below).

The run will cover about 8 miles (75-90 minutes) and will run out Buck Forest over to Conservation Rd, up by Lake Julia, and back from the Airstrip. The first 2 miles roll down hill, middle miles have some climbing, and last 1.5 miles are uphill.  Bring a water bottle and park in the gravel lot near Guion Farm.

DIRECTIONS

From Asheville, NC

Take I 26 east to Exit 40 (Asheville Airport exit). Turn right off Exit 40 onto NC 280 (also known as Airport Road). Take NC 280 south 16 miles to US 64. Turn left onto US 64 and go 3.7 miles to the stop light at the Texaco station in Penrose.

Turn right onto Crab Creek Rd and go 4.3 miles to DuPont Road. Turn right onto DuPont Rd and go 0.7 miles to a left on Sky Valley Road. Follow Sky Valley Road past the junction of Old CCC Road to the Guion Farm Access Area 1.6 miles on the right.

Results – Park Ridge Frostbite 5k – Fletcher, NC – February 21, 2010

It was another amazing weather day for the Frostbite 5k.  Frostbite?  I don’t think so – it was about 60 degrees at race time with abundant sunshine and I think runners probably thought it was a bit warm, especially on that uphill pull on Hutch Mountain Road.

Thomas Cason was the over all winner with a time of 16:26.  Sarah Willingham was the overall female winner with a time of 18:41.
