Rock the Quarry

Rock the Quarry

It’s not the first thing you’d think of doing — running around a quarry.  But, come on, we’re runners.  We’re always looking for something different.  It’s the Rock the Quarry 4 mile trail run at 9 AM on Saturday, October 3rd.

Jus’ Running is working the finish line so you can be assured the highest level of quality.

Here are directions to the race …

From I-40 E take the Swannanoa, Exit 59. Turn left at the end of the ramp onto Patton Cove Rd.

At stoplight, turn right on US-70 and continue on it for 2.4 miles.

At stoplight, turn left onto Grovestone Rd.

At stoplight, the intersection of Grovestone Rd. and Old US-70, turn left onto Old US-70.

Grove Stone & Sand Co. is on the right. Follow the posted signs and directions to the race course and appropriate parking.

Here is the official race website …

I won’t be there.  Nancy and I have to go to Raleigh to see some of our fellow Irishmen play some songs.  Must be a big deal, they’re at Carter-Finley Stadium and they call themselves U2.

Dupont State Forest Half Marathon

Dupont State Forest Half Marathon

I have always fussed in my mind about the fact that we have no spring half marathon in Western North Carolina.  In the past when I needed to run a half marathon in the spring, I hit the road.  I went to Charlotte in 2007 when I needed a half and I went to Charlottesville, VA in 2006 when I needed a half.  But now, I’m thrilled to learn that not only do we have a half marathon planned for 2010 – but it’s a trail Half Marathon.

It’s the Morris Broadband ½ Marathon at DuPont State Forest.  It’s a beautiful place – home of the 12k every March.  This is a very different course and should be great fun.

The race is set for April 10, 2010.  You can register online at Active:

The All Souls Christ School 5k - a Great Race

The All Souls Christ School 5k

This is a great race.  A festive environment on the campus of Christ School.  The race starts with a swift dash across a soccer field and then winds through a variety of trails — mostly shaded, some wide open grassy fields, and a healthy dose of mud.  A total of 56 eager runners completed the race.  This is a certified 5k and having run it and measured it with my Garmin over two years – I can attest to it.  It is 3.13 (2008) and 3.12 (2009).

Here are the results …

Thomas Wolfe 8k – Comparing 2009 and 2008 – Race Results

September 27, 2009 · 5 Comments

Bookmark and Share

I did an automated comparison of finish times for runners who completed the Thomas Wolfe 8k in 2008 and 2009.  This is similar to a comparison I did for the Citizen-Times Half Marathon and found it interesting.  Please keep in mind that there may be some mistakes here.  If the person’s name is not exactly the same both years that person would not be included.  According to this comparison 45 of the runners who completed the race this year (2009) also completed the race in 2008.  I ran a whopping 4 seconds faster this year than last.  At this rate of improvement it will take me about 30 years to run the pace I ran in 2006.

The comparison includes times for each year and the difference based upon which year was faster (2009 or 2008).

Thomas Wolfe 8k Results – Asheville, NC – September 26, 2009

September 26, 2009 · 15 Comments

The rain held off this cool and breezy morning as 203 runners lined up for the start of the Thomas Wolfe 8k in downtown Asheville.  The big guns were out in force.  A couple of out-of-town guns (Nate Peck and David Nightingale — both from Blowing Rock) showed up and accomplished two things that you don’t see too often:

  1. Finished virtually tied for first place at 25:19 (Peck won by a nose but the time difference was under a second).  That’s a pace of 5:06.
  2. Sent Dan Amick to fourth place.

It was like a Blowing Rock sweep.  Blowing Rock 2.  Asheville 0.  Not only did the overall winner come from Blowing Rock (as well as the second place finisher) but the first female finisher — Jessica Minty — was also from Blowing Rock, crossing the finish line 10 seconds ahead of Amber Moran.  But rest assured home team – I protected 75th place for Asheville.  Not a Blowing Rock runner in sight.   And when I run the All Souls Christ School Cross Country 5k tomorrow afternoon I will remain vigilant by protecting my finishing position in the race safe from any Blowing Rock incursion.

The breeze picked up now and then during the race, several times showing itself as an unpleasant headwind.  We were entertained briefly in Montford by a couple of musicians — one playing guitar and singing in a robe and the other shaking a tambourine.  The cruise through Riverside Cemetery is nice (and shortly after I left the cemetery the first finishers were crossing the finish line — ouch!).  The long pull up Patton Avenue is a little challenging but the fast downhill finish on Market Street is quite welcome (just watch your step on those bricks).

Thomas Wolfe 8k – September 26, 2009 – Asheville, NC

A little trivia.  The banner picture at the top of this blog is from the start of the 2006 Thomas Wolfe 8k.

The 33rd running of a classic 8k, winding through downtown Asheville, into the Montford neighborhood and through Riverside Cemetery.  The race starts on Broadway in front of the Mellow Mushroom and finishes at the Thomas Wolfe Visitor Center on Market Street.  Always a nice turnout — just short of 300 runners each of the last two years.  I first ran this in 2006 when there were only 176 runners and I managed to finish third in my age group.  I’m looking forward to this.

A nice 5k on a Sunday afternoon, starting in downtown Asheville and cruising through the Grove Park area.  The course has aspects in common with the start of the ACT Half Marathon and should be fun.  The race starts at 2 PM.

From the race website …

The 3rd Annual Run for the Horses 5K Run & 1-Mile Fun Walk & Dog Parade is set for Sunday, September 20 at 2 p.m. in historic downtown Asheville, NC. The event will take place in the Buncombe County Health Department parking lot at 25 Woodfin Street across from the YMCA.

This certified course takes runners on a scenic yet challenging run through downtown Asheville, set in the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains. A popular, family-friendly event, the race has expanded this year to include a whimsical dog parade along with the one-mile fun walk and a great line-up of vendor booths offering everything from pets for adoption to the latest running gear.
Tasty treats will be provided by Food Lion grocery store and refreshments compliments of McGuire, Wood, & Bissette and Pepsi will be on hand. The course is managed and certified by RMS Race Management Systems and is on the Asheville Track Club’s Grand Prix Circuit. Kids can enjoy decorating craft horses, dancing to the music, face painting, and petting our mascots, Joey and David-two friendly miniature horse. There will be wonderful raffle prizes and awards will be given to the top three runners in each age division for male and female as well as best overall male and female. Special prizes will also be given for the top three dogs in the parade.
